See how we helped East Sussex Healthcare Trust

The Trust provides a comprehensive range of services to patients, including over 280,000 scans/X-Rays and over 130,000 emergency department visits each year.

The Trust saw a sustained rise in in-patients requiring rapid access CT and MRI scans to support their care. Radiology was able to increase scanning capacity but did not have the number of radiologists in the relevant specialty areas to accommodate the increased daily urgent reporting requirements. The Trust wanted radiologists urgently to support the team and reduce backlogs.

The Trust expanded their existing SLA with Medica to include urgent reporting, one of Medica’s acute reporting services, at weekends. The urgent reporting service provides access to reports within four hours for more routine scans such as staging, dementia brain scans, HRCTs and ward patients.

The service provides the radiology team and referring clinicians with actionable reports in a timely manner, without impact to the Trust’s elective and acute services, which run in parallel. This enables the Trust to discharge patients and free up beds, which are in short supply, for sicker patients in greater need and to start each week without a backlog of ward patients.

"The beauty of SameDay is that it covers unexpected demand and can maximise CT scanning capacity despite local changes or limitations to radiology staffing.

The SameDay service has enabled us to maximise scanning capacity, despite the challenges presented by numerous and unpredictable staff absences throughout the pandemic. This means that the In-patient scanners are never sitting idle while there are radiographers available to run them."
