Leading figures from NHS leadership, radiology, AI governance and health innovation join as advisers to help Medica navigate a changing diagnostics landscape.
Medica has established a Strategic Advisory Board (SAB), bringing together senior clinicians, NHS leaders and health technology experts to provide independent insight to inform the company’s strategic direction and support its purpose of improving lives through excellence in diagnostics and research.
Meeting quarterly, the board will offer strategic advice and external perspective across key areas including diagnostic service delivery, digital transformation, AI adoption and healthcare governance. Though it will not hold any executive decision-making authority, it will act as a source of challenge and guidance as Medica continues to evolve its services globally.
The move comes as NHS diagnostic services face growing pressure. Demand for imaging continues to outstrip capacity, while workforce shortages remain a challenge. At the same time, advances in AI and digital technology are changing how services are delivered and overseen.
By drawing on the experience of individuals who have led and delivered change within NHS organisations, Medica aims to strengthen its ability to respond to these challenges and support system-wide performance.

Board members:
Professor Sir Norman Williams (Chair) is a former President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and senior clinical adviser to the Secretary of State for Health. He currently chairs the National Clinical Improvement Programme.
Dr Annabel Bentley is Medica’s Group Chief Medical Officer and brings over 30 years’ clinical and commercial experience in diagnostic and health services. She was formerly Executive Medical Director at InHealth, Chief Medical Officer at AXA Health, and Medical Director at Bupa UK, with extensive experience leading innovation and change across diagnostics and healthcare services using data insights to inform decision-making in healthcare.
Professor Ian Abbs is former CEO of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (the largest NHS Trust in England) and holds the interim role of Chief Medical Officer. He brings deep expertise in digital transformation, life sciences partnerships, and large-scale NHS system leadership.
Andrew Cannon is Medica’s Group CEO, he brings extensive senior leadership experience across healthcare and social care, including eight years as CEO of Voyage Care and leading large-scale healthcare delivery at Bupa.
Dr Amrita Kumar is Medica’s AI Clinical Lead and a national adviser to the Royal College of Radiologists and British Institute of Radiology. She has developed AI governance frameworks and implementation programmes across multiple hospital settings, and was awarded the 2024 NHS Parliamentary Award for establishing the UK’s first dedicated AI working group.
Professor David Lowe is Clinical Director of Innovation at the University of Glasgow and a founding member of the Centre of Excellence for Regulatory Science in AI. His work focuses on translating health technology into real-world clinical impact, with a particular focus on diagnostics, AI deployment and MHRA regulatory science.
Professor Susan Shelmerdine is a Consultant Paediatric Radiologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital, an NIHR Advanced Fellow, Honorary Associate Professor at UCL and Honorary Visiting Professor at City St George’s, University of London. Named 18th in the 2025 Digital Leaders AI 100, she is one of the most influential voices on safe and effective AI adoption in NHS radiology.
